Three, Two, One, GO!

Happy New Year! Somehow its already January and the races are in full swing. I left Canada in late November as a member of the World Cup team and arrived in Östersund, Sweden for the first races of the 2015/2016 season.

Sunset in Sweden

Östersund is a beautiful city of about 44,000 people in the middle Sweden. Besides the friendly people and wintery conditions, a big perk of this venue is a fantastic cafe called ‘Pause’. Great coffee and treats.

Getting ready to get caffeinated

The races there were a big success for Canada in general. Nathan and Rosanna kicked off the single mixed relay with a SILVER MEDAL, our mixed relay placed 10th (best result for us in three years), and I got my first World Cup points! Also, my teammate Macx Davies scored his first World Cup points with an amazing 10th place finish in the sprint! Way to set the bar high!!

We carried that momentum to Hochfilzen (Austria) and  Pokljuka (Slovenia) for round two and three. The men relayed their way to the flower ceremonies, while the women’s relay battled for a 10th place. Pokljuka proved to be a great course for Canadians with multiple point-scoring races for both the men and women.

Of the countries we visited before Christmas, I really enjoyed Pokljuka. It was my first time in Slovenia and we stayed about 30min from the race site in a small town called Bled. It’s relatively touristy which likely lent to its beauty and well kept historical sites. There is a castle built circa 1011 (the oldest castle in Slovenia) on hill side which overlooks Lake Bled. Best part? There is a small winery inside that lets you bottle and seal your own wine!

Resident swans… not as docile as you may think.

Lastly, I want to give a quick shout out to some new sponsors this year. The first is The Windtower Inn and Suites in Canmore. The second is Clear HR Consulting. Thank you both for believing in and supporting my dreams!
